How to Apply for a Machine Readable Passport (MRP)

A Machine Readable Passport (MRP) is a travel document with digitally printed personal data and other essential information. If you’re a Pakistani citizen and need to obtain an MRP, follow this step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying for an MRP, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the relevant authorities. Generally, Pakistani citizens are eligible to apply for an MRP.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

Collect the necessary documents needed for the MRP application. These typically include:

  • Original CNIC/NICOP (National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis)
  • Original Matriculation Certificate or equivalent document
  • Original Birth Certificate (for applicants under 18 years)
  • Proof of residence (e.g., utility bills, rental agreement)

Step 3: Complete the Online Application

Visit the official website of the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports Pakistan (DGIP) and complete the online MRP application form. Provide accurate personal information and upload scanned copies of the required documents.

Step 4: Schedule an Appointment

After completing the online application, schedule an appointment at the nearest Regional Passport Office (RPO) or Pakistan High Commission/Consulate in your country of residence for biometric verification and document submission.

Step 5: Biometric Verification and Document Submission

Visit the scheduled appointment venue on the appointed date and time. Provide biometric data (fingerprints, photograph) and submit the original documents for verification.

Step 6: Pay the Fee

Pay the prescribed fee for processing your MRP application. The fee amount may vary depending on factors such as your age, type of passport required (ordinary, urgent, or executive), and pages required.

Step 7: Application Processing

After completing biometric verification and fee payment, your MRP application will undergo processing by the DGIP. This involves verifying your documents, background checks, and printing your passport.

Step 8: Collect Your MRP

Once your MRP application is approved and processed, you will be notified to collect your passport from the same Regional Passport Office or Pakistan High Commission/Consulate where you submitted the application. Bring the payment receipt and original CNIC/NICOP for collection.

Step 9: Renewal and Updates

Keep your MRP updated and renew it before its expiry date. Any changes in personal information (e.g., name, marital status, address) should be promptly updated in the passport.
